Born in New York City in 1942, Douglas Tiberiis moved to Newport, Arkansas, with his family in 1947. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 1964, Tiberiis worked as a Freedom Summer volunteer in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He participated in the White Folks Project, which helped register poor whites to vote and helped facilitate discussion among white community leaders about racism and about taking steps towards becoming a more united southern citizenry.
